Guidelines for Reporting Crime
- We should report ALL criminal incidents to help the police build a case history against repeat offenders.
- Call 911 for crimes in progress.
- APD’s online portal is the primary place to file a report and start a case history.
- Anyone can file a report on the portal, and you can file on behalf of others.
- Be sure to take pictures of anything you see and have images, video, or files from Ring cameras ready to upload.
Property Crime:
- Call 911 for crimes in progress
- Gather any photos or videos from Ring cameras or the like.
- Create your report on the APD online and include all photos and videos of the incident: https://austinpd.mycasenumber.us/
- Post to the Heritage email list with a short description of what happened and your case/report number
Trespassing & Squatting:
- If someone is actively trespassing, call 911
- Report trespassing and squatting on the APD police portal (see above) and directly to the Ofc. Goodloe, Marlon.Goodloe@AustinTexas.gov
- Post to the Heritage email list with a short description of what happened and your case/report number
How to file a Criminal Trespass Notice
If someone regularly trespasses on your property, you can create a Criminal Trespass Notice (CTN), which authorizes responding officers to act on your behalf to remove subjects without you being there.
Officers inform subjects that they are not allowed on the property and ask them leave or face arrest. Once they are identified during that interaction, any subsequent visits to the property are deemed arrestable offenses, regardless of whether they are found on the property at the time of the event.
Steps:
- Fill out this PDF Authorization Letter
- Email it to Officer Goodloe (marlon.Goodloe@austintexas.gov) with a copy of your driver’s license.
Here are some Frequently Asked Questions about CTNs
Homeless Encampments:
We want to act with empathy and help people experiencing homelessness access resources that can benefit them. However, Austin has laws against public camping to protect everyone, and APD takes enforcement seriously. If you see a camp developing, follow these steps:
- Call 311 or use the app. State that there is a homeless camp (approximate location, number of people seen)
- Email Ofc. Goodloe with your case/report number and details for follow-up
Graffiti:
- Take pictures and gather videos from Ring cameras or the like.
- File a report using the city’s 311 app, which will note the graffiti’s location.
- Join HNA’s ongoing graffiti abatement efforts, which aim to address both prevention and enforcement.
Contact Jay Farrell (512-695-7245) to join groups that paint over graffiti on public property or to get city-provided paint supplies.
